I'm sitting on our deck typing this and listening to the rustle of the fall leaves and the continuous splash of our pond waterfall and just in heaven on earth! I love a 70ish degree sunny fall day without a lot of commitments. We also arrived home about 1 am from a trip to Indiana and Illinois for fall break.
Campus visit #2 was at Purdue in West Lafayette, IN.
Grant is really looking at colleges with a strong Air Force ROTC and a strong engineering program. He has ruled Vanderbilt out after being underwhelmed by it.
Located a mere 10.5 hours away from us in central Indiana lies the campus of Purdue. We had been there less than 10 minutes and all five of us liked it so much more than Vandy. We luckily found parking on one end of campus, which was near everything we needed to see - admissions, dorm tour, engineering, ROTC, campus highlights. We did walk to the other end to get a shirt in the bookstore so we made it all around. We all compare it very much to OSU - just bigger. Similar architecture, and well-maintained grounds. The people were friendly, too.
First stop by entering the football field. There was technically a No Trespassing sign on the gate, but considering the gate was open, Jason and I went in. The boys couldn't believe we would do such a thing (for real). The stadium was really big (bigger than the pic seems, and bigger than Boone Pickens).
About a block from the stadium was this gateway entrance to campus. Just so happens that the main engineering building is the one you can see in the background. ROTC is about one block down to the right and admissions was behind it. yay!
He was already smiling more than in Nashville.
We took a lunch break after our first round of walking at a neat little pub a few blocks from engineering world. We had a tour from a student around a few of the residence halls. They showed their standard double room. There are some singles, tris and quads, but most are like this. Very similar to what I am used to in "old school" OSU style. Grant and Kyle were both glad to see these and thought it was "so cool." We did learn that if Grant does ROTC here, those guys live together (kinda like their own fraternity but in a dorm).
ROTC building - Navy, Army and Air Force are all at this campus. Big group of kiddos!
The main area for drill events in their armory.
We met with two current engineering students for 15 minutes who gave us a great overview and answered all of our questions about the program. We loved everything we heard.
Some other highlights around the campus....
He loved it. I would love it more if it were half the distance away and not a full day's drive. But, oh well! I'd say he will apply here.
